This Life is a child role (518)
Pre-production.
It means ‘before starting the work of production’ and refers to the things that must be done before starting filming, such as script, storyboard, casting, and filming location.
Contrary to its original meaning, in real life the word pre-production is used to refer to works that go into production and are aired as completed before being scheduled by a broadcasting station.
In other words, like a movie, the entire episode was completed in advance and only broadcast once it started airing.
“Ah, pre-production… It would be great for us to do that, but since the broadcasting company supports more than half of the production cost, it is a problem to get the amount paid, there are some difficulties in casting according to the estimate, adding PPL, and most of all, the opinions of viewers. “It’s hard to reflect…”
As soon as he heard the word pre-production, Mingyu smiled awkwardly and made excuses.
The biggest reason the Korean broadcasting industry is reluctant to do pre-production is that viewers’ opinions cannot be reflected in real time.
Programs are produced to attract viewers’ attention, raise awareness of the channel, and sell expensive advertisements, but producing a work that does not meet needs leads to losses.
‘The difference between being able to correct the misalignment and not being able to do it is big.’
From the actors and producers’ perspective, they preferred an environment where they could work with leisure, but production companies and broadcasters were hesitant to engage in high-risk pre-production.
Suhyeon was also not unaware of this fact.
However, there was a line that even he, who usually followed suit, could not compromise.
“〈Soul Doctor〉 is a drama that focuses on medical practice.”
“That’s right. Due to the nature of Korean dramas, it is said that romance cannot be completely excluded, but the goal is to create a simple genre drama, excluding romance as much as possible. Viewers these days want that.”
“But given the nature of terrestrial broadcasting, it won’t be easy.”
Soo-yeol calmly recited the facts to Min-gyu, who expressed confidence by saying that he fit the current trend.
And objective indicators were introduced.
“There were a total of 15 dramas aired on NBC last year. Among them, there are 0 works with a medical theme, and only 2 works are centered around occupations…”
The data that Suyeol clearly organizes is based on the viewer’s preferences and responses, as revealed in NBC’s preference ratings through programming, as much as possible. It was captured objectively.
It was a romance and a wild feast that didn’t fit anything that Min-gyu said.
“Since its inception, NBC has only once produced a medical drama with very little romance added.”
“Ah yes! “ER,” set in an emergency room, aired on NBC. It also ranked first in viewership ratings in its time slot. We also considered the project and joined hands with NBC. “Now that they have experienced success, I think they will believe in us too.”
Producer Min-gyu, who had a confused expression amid the rows of numbers and statistics, quickly jumped in and showed confidence when a topic he knew came up.
However, the violence of numerical sequences based on statistics and data has not ended.
“It was a whopping 13 years ago. Moreover, 〈ER〉 was a discarded card at the time. On the NBC side…”
With an expressionless face, Soo-yeol listed the situations, conflicts, and problems that ‘ER’ experienced.
None of the content was positive, and PD Kang was left speechless and only kept his mouth shut.
‘Wow… I haven’t seen that in a while and it’s really scary.’
Su-hyeon, who was looking at Su-yeol and Min-gyu across the river, clicked her tongue inwardly.
As befits a person who was obsessed with the position of the 10 million viewers, the sequence was accurate and recited data based on facts.
The content is so vast and accurate that it takes your breath away.
It was a living example of how scary objective data can be.
‘If it were something that most actors or agencies said, they would just ignore it…’
Soo-hyun was the person with the highest stock price among young male actors.
It’s hard to refuse even if you say whatever you want and make a request, but it becomes even more difficult when all claims are based on facts.
‘If Sang-il hyung roasted and boiled his opponents like a snake, Soo-yeol is the type of person who beats them up by beating them up. In some ways, I’m the more difficult type because I feel like we can’t communicate.’
The reason Sang-il had a different type of manager sit next to Su-hyeon was probably because he wanted a picture like this.
If you look closely, Sang-il had a bad personality.
‘But… this work has to go into pre-production anyway.’
‘Soul Doctor’ was Soohyun’s first medical drama and a work that dealt with specialized content.
A drama that combines a bit of fantasy with the joys and sorrows of a job that never falls into action or thriller romance.
As she was drawn to the script and chose it, Soohyun wanted to properly prepare for this work.
‘It would be difficult to do that with a page script.’
If you’ve acted in several medical dramas, you might know that this was Soo-hyun’s first time playing a doctor, and she had a lot to study for realistic acting.
In such a situation, if I acted as if I was being chased by a schedule, I could only perform superficially.
‘If this is a work with more than 20 episodes, I would compromise on half pre-production, but it’s 14 episodes, right?’
As works of less than 10 episodes flooded OTT platforms such as Netfilms, the atmosphere of terrestrial broadcasters and general programming channels gradually shifted towards shorter and thicker seasons.
This means that although it is short at around 10 episodes, it ends with some lingering feelings so that part 2 can come out.
‘Soul Doctor’ was also planned similarly, and Su-hyeon thought that ‘pre-completion of the script’ was not an unreasonable request.
‘okay. Completion of the script. That’s the only thing I asked Soo-yeol to do.’
As long as the script path is ok, the shooting schedule will follow on its own.
As much as he believed in his own vision, Su-hyeon hoped that the impression he felt when he first read ‘Soul Doctor’ would not be changed by popularity or external pressure.
“…All right.”
While he was deep in thought, PD Kang, who was sitting across from him, expressed his acceptance with difficulty.
He was greeted gently by Soo-yeol and looked somewhat haggard than when he first saw him.
“Once we start pre-production, we have to negotiate with the broadcaster one more time… But we will do our best to get NBC to accept it.”
Min-gyu, who was as flabby as a withered green onion, gradually regained his confidence as his words became longer.
Suhyun also smiled brightly because she felt the will to be with Suhyeon somehow.
“I really want to join you too. “The script was really fun, and the character Seok-hyeon is quite attractive, so it would be a shame to miss it.”
As the manager, Soo-yeol, scolded her to the fullest, Soo-hyeon held out a carrot with a good expression.
It was a team play where the roles of good and bad police were clearly divided.
“Actress Kang Soo-hyun likes our writer Shim’s work so much… I don’t think NBC will blindly reject it either.”
Min-gyu, who regained his confidence, made an abundance of empty checks and expressed his excitement by saying that he was looking forward to the day they would be together.
Soo-hyeon cheered him up with an appropriate compliment without any denial.
“Then the other things…”
“The biggest requirement is pre-production, and everything else…” Once we
got over the difficult hill, the rest of the conversation flowed smoothly.
Artist Shim, who relaxed, gradually revealed his affection for his work and showed motivation.
At the end of the meeting, PD Kang and writer Shim expressed confidence in pre-production.
It was just as Su-hyeon and Su-yeol had intended.
“Mr. Soo-yeol, you worked hard today.”
“I just did what I had to do.”
“But it’s hard to be a villain who is hated by others.”
“That’s the manager’s job. “An actor’s goodness shines brighter when the manager is like the devil.”
“Soo-yeol…”
After the two left, Su-hyeon talked with Su-yeol and was impressed by his professionalism.
I was really happy to be able to work with such talented and grateful people.
* * *
Yeoul, the production company of ‘Soul Doctor’, announced that it would soon complete the entire script and begin production.
As Soo-hyeon had hoped, it was decided to proceed without modifying the script midway.
It was expected that production would take some time as there were no modifications in the middle, but that was something that could be waited for.
‘I’m glad that things seem to be going well, including the movie.’
Suhyeon walked around the campus, enjoying the spring in full bloom.
Perhaps because there were no problems with the movie or the next project, the way to class today felt beautiful.
‘Oh, I should buy a cup of coffee.’
Suhyeon, who was heading to the lecture hall, noticed a cafe located within the university and turned around for a moment.
I had to order coffee for Hyebin.
‘It would have been nice to give it to me last week, but I missed it that day… But is it really just a cup of coffee? ‘Isn’t this too weak?’
Suhyun narrowed her brows as she ordered hot chocolate and Americano for herself.
I said it was burdensome, so I bought him coffee, but I felt like the pen in return wasn’t enough.
‘I think it would be better to buy some food…’
While he was pondering, the part-timer handed him coffee and hot chocolate.
Just looking at the whipped cream on top of the hot chocolate was sweet.
“bon appetite! Oh, and this is a service. Please come often…”
“…Thank you.”
Su-hyeon smiled at the part-time worker as she received the cookie that was shyly handed to her as a service.
I thought it would be better to avoid that employee’s working hours.
‘I am grateful for the favor, but the favor I send as a service ends up being a burden. ‘Am I too much of a petty citizen?…’
After obtaining two drinks and cookies, he walked faster.
There were still stares from students who recognized him, but no one disturbed him.
“hello.”
“Ah, hello…”
Hyebin, seeing her for the first time in two weeks, greeted Suhyeon with a still face.
Even though he somehow opened his face, he still seemed to feel burdened.
“Drink this and do it.”
“Oh, thank you.”
“But are you really okay with a cup of coffee? “It’s because I’m so grateful.”
While attending college, it was difficult for Soohyun to meet someone who was selfless toward me.
There were really very few people who showed unselfish, human kindness.
‘So, I guess it’s a pity…’
Although there is no professional contact at all, they meet in a space called school and become friends.
After meeting Hye-bin, Su-hyeon’s dream of going to campus rose again.
Since it was a desire that I had given up on halfway and then regrown, I couldn’t help but become a little persistent.
Growling.
As Su-hyeon was feeling sad that the topic of conversation had disappeared by handing over coffee, a small but clear sound was heard in his ears.
Suhyeon looked in the direction where the sound came from.
Hyebin, even her ears were dyed red, was lowering her head.
“That’s because I couldn’t eat breakfast…”
“That’s possible.”
“Yes… I’ll drink it well…”
He growled,
“… I’ll drink it.”
Before Hyebin could finish speaking, his stomach revealed its presence once again.
Seeing him looking embarrassed, Su-hyeon secretly drew lines around his eyes.
“Would you like to go eat together after class? “I will live.”
